Brief

I wanted to take a look at character design in branding and how it can be used to create a brand collateral. I set myself a brief to create a body of merchandise and print assets for an indie plant and flower shop called “Best Buds” in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. I envisioned the target audience being young people or young professionals with an interest in design or other creative mediums mostly living in the city centre or just outside in areas like Chorlton or Salford.

Concept

After exploring several designs focused on flowers and leaves I decided to develop a pair of characters made from plant pots. The name is a fun pun, and I wanted the characters to feel friendly and cute but still quite contemporary and refined. The wordmark also features the leaf details from the plant pot characters just to tie everything together.

After doing some research into vintage American mascot design I chose to keep the palette to one colour that I used for the line work, shading and the copy.
